How to use vocal presets in FL Studio

1. Download and unzipUnzip the archive; the presets are .fst files.
2. Load a presetLoad it in FL Studio the way you load any other .fst preset.
3. Match it to your voicePlay your vocal through it and adjust. Thresholds, EQ and effect levels depend on your microphone and how loud you recorded, so treat a preset as a starting point.
4. Use the right one for each trackPut the main-vocal preset on your lead and the adlibs preset on your adlib tracks, so they sit differently in the mix.

Main vocals and adlibs need different chains

Main vocals have to be clear and sit right in the front of the beat. Adlibs sit behind them: they are usually wider, with more reverb and delay, and quieter. Having a separate preset for each saves you from rebuilding the chain every time you start a song.

How to mix rap vocals in FL Studio: a quick checklist

Whether you use our presets or build a vocal chain from scratch, the order of the steps is the same.

1. Record at a safe level. Aim for peaks around −12 to −6 dB on the meter and never let it clip. You can always add level later; you cannot remove clipping.
2. Clean the low end. Add an EQ (Fruity Parametric EQ 2 works well) and cut everything below roughly 80–100 Hz. If the voice sounds boxy, try a small cut between 200 and 400 Hz.
3. Compress. Start with a ratio of about 3:1 to 4:1 and bring the threshold down until the loud parts are reduced by around 3–6 dB. A second, gentler compressor often sounds more natural than one that works hard.
4. Tame harsh “s” sounds. If the vocal hisses, reduce the 5–8 kHz area with a de-esser or a narrow EQ cut.
5. Add presence and air. A gentle lift around 2–5 kHz brings the words forward, and a soft high shelf above 10 kHz adds air.
6. Build space on sends. Put reverb and delay on send tracks instead of directly on the vocal, and filter the lows and highs of the returns so the effects do not get muddy.
7. Treat adlibs differently. Pan them, narrow their EQ, add more effect and keep them a few decibels under the lead.
8. Check it in context. Listen at a low volume and next to a reference track you like. If you can hear every word at a low volume, the level is right.
